Description

Vriesea psittacina. This species is epiphytic bromeliad with funnel rosettes of arching strap-shaped pale green leaves about 50cm long, with elliptic, green-pale brown sheaths. In mid summer, they will produce slender racemes with yellow-red-green bracts and spreading green-yellow flowers.

Cultivation

They are frost tender, min 15C, and will need semi-shade and a rooting medium of equal parts, with humus-rich soil and either sphagnum moss or bark chips used for orchid culture. Use soft water moderately when in growth and sparingly at other times from mid-spring to mid-autumn, keeping rosette centres filled with water.

Propagation

Propagation is by offsets or seeds in the spring.
