Description

Salvia × microphylla ‘Hot Lips’. A newer variety with 'hot' red and white flowers that are scented and attract butterflies and bees. Drought tolerant. The aromatic foliage may turn dark red in autumn.

Interest and use

Grown for their tubular, 2-lipped, often brightly coloured flowers and aromatic foliage. Leaves of some species may be used for flavouring foods. Suitable for coastal conditions.

Cultivation

Some species will tolerate only light frosts, but some of the perennials are more frost-hardy. They will grow well when planted in full sun in well drained light soil with adequate watering in the summer. Cut back in spring.

Propagation

Propagate shrubs and sub-shrubs by softwood, semi-ripe or basal cuttings in mid-summer. Sow seed of half hardy annuals under glass in early spring and of fully hardy species outdoors in mid-spring. You can propagate perennials by division in the spring.
