Description

Acer freemanii ‘Armstrong’ (Canadian maple). This small to medium-sized tree has a tightly columnar habit, making it very useful as a street tree, or for smaller gardens.

It is half Acer rubrum and half Acer saccharinum but the latter dominates with autumn colour of orange and yellows rather than deep red.

Origin

Named after the Californian botanist Oliver Freeman who in 1933, at the U.S. National Arboretum in Washington D.C., was the first to synthesize this hybrid that naturally occurs in the wild.

Cultivation

This Acer prefers rich well-drained soils it is tolerant of most soil types. It will cope with partial shade but performs better in full sun.

Propagation

Species are propagated by seed, or by grafting or simple layering in late winter or early spring, or by budding in summer.

Pests, diseases or disorders

Very susceptible to damage by glyphosate (Roundup)
