Description

Daucus carota (Wild carrot). Wild carrot grows a rosette of leaves in the spring and summer, while building up the stout taproot that stores large amounts of sugars for the plant to flower in the second year. This plant produces a flat-topped white umbel, often with a solitary purple flower in the center and feathery, parsley-like leaves and hairy stems. This plant is similar to other poisonous plants in the parsley family, so it is unadvised to eat it in the wild, unless positively identified by an expert. As a wild flower, it attracts hoverflies and other beneficial insects to the garden, as well as being an attractive flower in its own right.
