Description

Ficus carica ‘Ice Crystal’. This fig produces small, sweet fruit, as well as having unusual, ornamental leaves which resemble ice crystals and turn bright yellow in the autumn.

Cultivation

For increased fruit production, plant the fig in a container, or bed with a restricted root run, eg) next to a wall. They need a sheltered, sunny site. Do not over-feed, or you will encourage lush foliage at the expense of fruit, unless that is the effect you want!

Propagation

Propagate by seed in spring or by leaf-bud, stem-tip cuttings or by air layering in summer.

Figs have an obligate mutualism with Fig wasps. Only the Fig wasp can pollinate Figs and they can only reproduce in Fig flowers.

Pests, diseases or disorders

Red spider mite and scale insects may be a nuisance.
