Cultivation

Prefers a cool and shady spot and moist conditions, so keep well mulched and conserve water by watering early in the morning or late at night, avoiding the leaves. Feeding the plant will produce more luxuriant foliage, but it will also make it tastier for slugs and snails. Protect from slugs early in the season. If growing in a container it might be worthwhile to use nematodes.

Propagation

Propagate by division of the fleshy crowns in early spring. Seed raised plants very rarely come true to type (except H.ventricosa).

Pests, diseases or disorders

Slugs and snails. Crown rot can develop if the soil has been waterlogged.
