Description

Betula ermanii ‘Grayswood Hill’ (Ermans birch). One of the finest birch from N.E Asia and Japan, first cultivated in the 1880s.

it is an elegant and vigorous medium to large tree with green, often heart-shaped and clearly veined leaves. These appear early in spring, together with yellow-brown male catkins, and turn shades of yellow in autumn. The trunk and branches can seem almost luminescent in winter light.

An outstanding garden tree with peeling, creamy-white bark that has distinctive pinky horizontal lenticels.

It grows well on most soils and will keep a conical shape if the leader is retained.
