Description

Toona ciliata (Red cedar). Red cedar native to lowland, sub tropical rainforest in Queensland and New South Wales. Highly prized for its easily worked red 'mahogany' timber, it was unsustainably exploited in the 19th and early 20th centuries. One of Australia's few native deciduous trees.

Origin

Afghanistan, India, China, Papua New Guinea, N. Korea, Eastern Australia

Interest and use

Highly valued for wood-working: furniture, panelling, general construction, ship-building
