Description

Veronicastrum virginicum (Culver's root). Also called Leptandra virginica and Veronica virginica, this is a wild grassland species of herbaceous perennial. The serrated leaves are lance shaped and arranged alternately in whorls around the stem and the flowers are white and held on spike-like racemes giving the impression of a candelabra.

Origin

Northern USA and just over the border into S. Canada. The common name of Culver's Root comes from a certain Dr Culver in the 18th century, who advocated the use of the root as a medicinal aid for liver complaints and constipation. However, it is poisonous.

Interest and use

Grown mainly for the flowers. Suitable for cottage style or prairie-style plantings.
