Description

Berberis genus (Barberry). These are deciduous, semi-evergreen or evergreen, spiny shrubs. There are about 400 species, with leaves that are leathery, usually small to medium in size and often with teeth. The flowers are produced in clusters of rounded or cup-shaped, cream, yellow, orange or red blooms.

Interest and use

Grown for the rounded to cup-shaped flowers and for their fruits. Suitable for coastal conditions.

Cultivation

They are fully to frost hardy and will require sun or semi-shade in any soil except waterlogged soil. Watch out for the thorns.

Propagation

You should propagate the species by seeds in the autumn, and the deciduous hybrids and cultivars can be propagated by softwood or semi-ripe cuttings in the summer.

Pests, diseases or disorders

Aphids and powdery mildew may be troublesome.
