Description

Berberis julianae (Wintergreen barberry). This species is an upright evergreen shrub with leaves that are obovate to elliptic and are glossy deep green and turn red and orange in the autumn, staying on the shrub until the following spring. The flowers are borne in pendent racemes of yellow blooms in the early summer; they are followed by red fruits which ripen to black.

Interest and use

Good for dense, impenetrable hedging up to 3 metres high, as the spines on the leaves are some of the sharpest of all Barberry varieties.

Cultivation

They are fully to frost hardy and will require sun or semi-shade in any soil except waterlogged soil. Watch out for the thorns.

Propagation

You should propagate the species by seeds in the autumn, and the deciduous hybrids and cultivars can be propagated by softwood or semi-ripe cuttings in the summer.

Pests, diseases or disorders

Aphids and powdery mildew may be troublesome.
