Betula genus (Birch). This genus consists of deciduous trees. They have sparkling white to pinkish brown trunks with vivid green spring foliage. The leaves are short, broad and serrated and mostly turn gold in the autumn before dropping.

Grown for the bark and autumn colour.
They are fully hardy. You will need to plant in a sunny position in any moist and well drained soil; some species will prefer acidic soil. The young trees should be transplanted in the autumn.
Propagation is by grafting in late winter or by softwood cuttings in the early summer.
Aphids, sawfly, honey fungus and mildew may cause problems.
