Description

Betula nigra (Red birch). This is a useful landscape tree, and it will adapt to a wide range of growing conditions. It has arching stems and small soft green leaves. This is a short lived tree with beautiful pinkish, smooth and shiny young bark which will turn brown as it matures. The older bark will flake and curls in brown sheets. The leaves are about 2-3ins long; they are bright green on top with a silver below, and will turn yellow in the autumn.

Cultivation

Its natural habitats are wetlands such as a stream bank but it will also grow in dry soil as long as it receives regular watering.
