Biarum genus. These are mainly autumn-flowering tuberous perennials. They have tiny flowers which are carried on a pencil shaped spadix, enclosed within a tubular spathe. The upper part of the spathe is hooded or flattened out. They are frost hardy, but during cold wet winters you will need to protect in a cold frame or greenhouse. They will need a sunny position with well drained soil. Make sure you dry out the tubers when dormant in the summer. Propagate in the autumn by seeds or offsets.
