Description

Acer palmatum ‘Rubrum’ (Japanese maple). This shrub grows up to 6 meters in height. It has nearly heart-shaped, triangular, five-to-seven lobed leaves which are lustrous and deep green in the summer, turning scarlet red in the autumn. The bark is smooth and red on young branches and grey on mature growth.

Cultivation

It will prefer warmer climates than most other maples. It will need shade and shelter or the leaves may shrivel.

Leaf eating caterpillars or aphids sometimes infest plants. Also prone to scale insects, tar spot, Verticillium wilt, leaf scorch and honey fungus.
