Bomarea genus. These are herbaceous, deciduous or evergreen, tuberous-rooted, scrambling and twining climbers which are native to Mexico. They are grown for their umbels of tubular or bell-shaped flowers. The leaves are simple, narrow, alternate and whorled.

Grown for the tubular or bell-shaped flowers.


They are half hardy to frost tender, min 5C. Grow them in any well drained soil with full light. You must water regularly in the growing season and sparingly when dormant. You might need to provide some support. You need to cut out the old flowering stems at ground level when the leaves turn yellow.


Propagation is by seeds or by division in the early spring.

Pests, diseases or disorders

Red spider mites, whiteflies and aphids under glass.
