Description

Acer platanoides ‘Columnare’ (Column Norway maple). Columnar’ has mid green, 5-7-lobed dentate leaves in summer, which turn yellow before falling in the autumn. It has a narrow column shape. Introduced in the 1850s for urban areas as it is tolerant of a wide range of soils and temperatures, as well as taking up less space. Small yellow-green flowers are produced in the spring.

Cultivation

This maple has a shallow root system and therefore should not be planted into the lawn as it will take all the moisture and nutrients out from the soil.

Propagation

Species are propagated by seed, or by grafting or simple layering in late winter or early spring, or by budding in summer.

Pests, diseases or disorders

Leaf eating caterpillars or aphids sometimes infest plants. Also prone to scale insects, tar spot, Verticillium wilt, leaf scorch and honey fungus.
