Description

Acer rubrum (Red maple). This species of maple will provide bright red flowers in the spring before the leaves appear which are about 7cms across with 3-5 lobes; they are followed by bright red fruits in late spring and early summer.As a planted tree it makes rapid growth, with a straight trunk and narrow crown at first, but spreading broadly with age. The foliage is dark green in the summer, with grey-green undersides and can turn bright shades of orange-red in the autumn. Twigs and leaf stems are also reddish in colour.

Cultivation

It is better grown in fertile soil that is well-prepared since this will enable the young roots to spread easily, developing a strong root system. It does not mind wet soil because it naturally grows in low and swampy areas. Tolerates air pollution.

Species are propagated by seed, or by grafting or simple layering in late winter or early spring, or by budding in summer.
