Description

Acer saccharum (Sugar maple). This is the Sugar Maple and it is known for the flame-coloured autumn leaves. In the early spring red flowers will appear and they are followed by distinctive winged seed pods. The new spring leaves appear bright green and become a deeper shade of green in the summer.

Interest and use

Shade, ornamental, foliage, specimen. Primary source of maple syrup. The wood is used to make bowling alleys and courts, the floors of basketball courts, baseball bats, pool cues and musical instruments. The leaf is the national symbol of Canada.

Cultivation

You should plant in the spring or autumn in rich soil that is well drained. Break up your soil to a fine texture so that the root system will spread easily; this will help the young tree to establish itself more quickly.

Propagation

Species are propagated by seed, or by grafting or simple layering in late winter or early spring, or by budding in summer.

Pests, diseases or disorders

Leaf eating caterpillars or aphids sometimes infest plants. Also prone to scale insects, tar spot, Verticillium wilt, leaf scorch and honey fungus.
