Description

Acer truncatum (Tatarian maple). This tree has a broad, rounded crown. The leaves are broad about 10cms wide and 8cms long; they are shiny and mid green in summer and turn a dark purplish-red, sometimes with orange, in the autumn. They are palmate and 5-lobed and the petiole exudes a white latex sap if broken. Yellow-green flowers in corymbs are produced in early spring. It is often slow growing and will remain shrubby for many years.

Cultivation

Leaf eating caterpillars or aphids sometimes infest plants. Also prone to scale insects, tar spot, Verticillium wilt, leaf scorch and honey fungus.
