Description

Butomus umbellatus (Flowering rush). A spreading deciduous perennial water plant native to Eurasia. Bears umbels of cup-shaped flowers in pink, red, white with darker veins. This plant is often found in the wild in Northern Europe. STEM: Upright, leafless flowering stem. ROOT: Thick, fleshy, underground stem. HAIRS: Absent STIPULES: Absent LEAF-STALK: Absent BRACTS: Narrowly triangular, papery. FLOWER STALK: Longer than flower, unequal. SEPALS: 3, oblong, purplish. PETALS: 3, oval. STAMENS: 6-9 STIGMA: 1 per ovary. OVARY: 6-9, 2-celled. SEEDS: Many, narrowly oblong.
