Description

Calluna genus (Heather). This genus consists of one species, Calluna vulgaris, but many other cultivars. The evergreen, woody stemmed shrubs will flower from mid-summer to late autumn, and the flowers are bell-shaped and borne in dense clusters. Its native habitats are open heathland and moorland and in some bog vegetation and acidic pine and oak woodlands.

Interest and use

Grown for their flowers and foliage (the latter all year round).

Cultivation

The plants require a lime-free soil. After flowering each year they can be lightly pruned to keep a bushy and compact habit.

Seed in spring for species or for cultivators by softwood cuttings, division or by dropping in summer.

Prone to fungal diseases.
