Description

Acokanthera genus (Kaffia plum). This is a genus of five evergreen shrubs and trees which come from Africa. The white flowers are borne in tubular clusters. It produces medium-sized dark purple fruits which are usually poisonous.

Tropical to subtropical regions

Interest and use

Ornamental. The milky sap is deadly poisonous and is used as an arrow-tip poison by elephant poachers. Suitable for coastal conditions.

Cultivation

Grow under glass in loam-based potting compost. These plants are frost tender and need a minimum of 10C. They will require full light and a well drained soil.

Propagation

Sow seeds in spring or autumn at about 22C. In summer you can grow semi-ripe cuttings rooted with bottom heat.
