Description

Aconitum carmichaelii (Azure monkshood). This species is a hardy perennial which can grow to the rather impressive height of about 2 metres. The flowers are deep purple inside and paler blue outside, and they are formed in clustered spikes. The leaves are three-lobed and the lobes are often notched providing a lovely backdrop for the flowers.

Cultivation

Grow in a moist well drained soil in a partly shaded area. It is very long-lived. Needs staking

Propagation

By seed. Clumps take a long time to establish so only more mature plants can be successfully divided. Divide in early spring or autumn.

Fungal stem rot, Verticillium wilt and aphids may be a problem.
