They are fully hardy and will prefer woodland conditions, with moist peaty soil and shade. The berries of some species contain a chemical that has a sedative effect on the muscles of the heart and so can induce a heart attack. Unfortunately, they look attractive to children, so caution should be used. Not poisonous to birds, but poisonous to rabbits.
Propagation is by division in the spring or by seed. Sow seeds in a cold frame in autumn.
