Description

Actaea rubra (Baneberry). This perennial produces fluffy spikes of mauve-white tinted flowers in late spring and are followed by glossy berries that are red in colour. Leaves are bright green and deeply divided.

Cultivation

They are fully hardy and will prefer woodland conditions, with moist peaty soil and shade. The berries of some species contain a chemical that has a sedative effect on the muscles of the heart and so can induce a heart attack. Unfortunately, they look attractive to children, so caution should be used. Not poisonous to birds, but poisonous to rabbits.

By seed in autumn or division in the spring.
