Description

Chaenomeles genus (Quince). This genus consists of deciduous thorny spring-flowering shrubs. The flowers will bloom in various colours. The leaves are simple and finely toothed.

Characteristics

Deciduous, Shrubs or Trees

Origin

China and Japan

Interest and use

Grown for their showy flowers and fragrant fruits, used for preserves.

Cultivation

They are fully hardy and will prefer a sunny position and well drained soil. On wall-trained shrubs cut back side-shoots after flowering to 2 or 3 buds and shorten shoots growing away from wall during growing season.

Propagation

You can propagate the species by softwood or greenwood cuttings or by suckering in the summer or by seed in the autumn, and the cultivars by cuttings only in the summer.

Pests, diseases or disorders

Scale insects and aphids. Fireblight and chlorosis, on chalk soils, are common problems.
