Description

Actinidia genus. These plants are mainly deciduous. There are shrubs up to 6 metres in height and woody-stemmed twining climbers up to 30 metres in the tree canopy of their native habitats.

E. Asia

The name Actinidia comes from the Greek 'aktin' - ray. A reference to the radiate form of their star-like flowers.

Interest and use

Climbing

Cultivation

They are fully hardy to frost tender, min 10C. They will prefer partial shade and can be grown in any well drained soil that will not dry out. Prune in winter if necessary. Shelter from the wind. Under glass, grow in loam based potting compost. To obtain fruit both male and female plants are required.

Propagation

Propagation is by seed in the spring or autumn, by semi-ripe cuttings in mid-summer or by layering in the winter.
