The art of making Bonsai trees is truly a unique and special hobby, but oh so rewarding. Not for the impatient gardener though, as Bonsai trees grow veeeery…
Cultivation
They are tolerant of chalky soils but grow best in moist but well drained neutral to slightly acid soil. If the conifer produces more than one leader, to maintain the general conical habit remove all but one leader. To restrict the height of the plant, the leader can be cut back.
Propagation
Propagate by seed sown in autumn or spring (but forms selected for leaf colour do not come true). Evergreen current growth cuttings in autumn to spring. Deciduous softwood cuttings in summer.
Pests, diseases or disorders
Aphids, honey fungus may be a problem where young plants are more susceptible.
