Adansonia digitata (Baobab). This is a deciduous tree with a swollen trunk. The leaves are rounded and palmate with 5-7 leaflets. The white flowers are held on long stalks, are about 10-12cm across and will bloom in the summer. This species of tree can grow to about 18m high and 30m wide.
Interest and use
The edible leaves are used as a green vegetable in soups, the seeds are used as a thickener in cooking and the fruit pulp, which is very high in vitamin C, is eaten raw or added to porridge. The bark fibers are used for rope or string and used in basketry. Medicinally, the plant is used for digestive problems and skin complaints, as well as to help address a lack of iron.
