Description

Chelidonium majus (Greater celandine). An upright clumped herb native to Europe and Asia. Pinnatifid or pinnatisect leaves are lobed, pinnate or alternately arranged. The bright yellow flowers, which last from mid-spring to mid autumn, are smaller than the common poppy but very much alike otherwise. Once used for medicinal purposes in the treatment of warts, corns and ringworm. This plant is often found in the wild in Northern Europe. STEM: Upright, branched, with orange sap. ROOT: Woody stock, with fibres from old leaf bases. HAIRS: Sparse. STIPULES: Absent LEAF-STALK: Long below, absent above. BRACTS: Present FLOWER STALK: About equaling flower. SEPALS: 2, separate, soon falling, hairy. PETALS: 4, oval, broadest above middle. STAMENS: Numerous, yellow. STIGMA: 1, 2 lobes on short style. OVARY: 1, 1-celled SEEDS: Many.
