Aegilops genus (Goat grass). A genus of approximately 21 annual grasses with slender stems and linear leaves.
Annuals, Deciduous, Rhizomes, Herbaceous or Grasses
Of historical interest, as the species Aegilops tauschii naturally hybridised with the cultivated 'Emmer' wheat, grown 8000 years ago, which formed what we now call 'common wheat', Triticum aestivum.
The name Aegilops comes from Aegilops comes from the Greek word 'aegilos', which could mean one of various things: a goat', 'goat-like' or 'a grass that goats like'.
