Description

Aegilops tauschii (Tausch's Goatgrass). Also known as Aegilops squarrosa, this is a grass with narrow lance-shaped leaves and a tufted flowering spike.

Characteristics

Annual, Deciduous, Rhizome, Grass

Origin

Middle East

Interest and use

This species naturally hybridised with the cultivated 'Emmer' wheat, grown 8000 years ago, which formed what we now call 'common wheat', Triticum aestivum. It is therefore important in wheat breeding programmes to develop strains which are tolerant of changing global climatic conditions, as well as in the search for natural resistance to diseases and pests.
