Description

Clerodendrum splendens. A climbing evergreen vine native to tropical West Africa, (mainly around the Gulf of Guinea). Bears rich green, ovate to elliptic, opposite leaves. Showy bright red flowers are born in terminal panicles in the summer. Requires warm temperatures as it will not withstand frost.

Cultivation

Thin out crowded growth in spring. Stems require support. They are fully hardy to frost tender, min 5C and will need humus-rich, well drained soil. Give them a position in full sun with partial shade in the summer. Make sure you water them freely in the growing season, and less at other times.

Propagation

Propagation is by seeds in the spring, or by softwood cuttings in late spring or by semi-ripe cuttings in the summer.

Pests, diseases or disorders

Whitefly, red spider mite and mealy bug may be a problem.
