Aesculus genus (Horse chestnut). These are deciduous trees and shrubs. They are grown for their bold and divided leaves. The flowers are conspicuous upright panicles or clusters of flowers, which are followed by fruits sometimes with spiny outer casings.

The name Aesculus is thought to derive from the Greek 'esca', meaning nourishment. This is reference to the fact flour was ground from the kernels of some species.
Shade, ornamental. Children use the seeds of some species to play 'conkers'.
They are fully to frost hardy and will require sun or semi-shade in fertile well drained soil.
Propagate by seed for the species in autumn, cultivars by budding in late summer or by grafting in late winter.
Leaf spot may affect young foliage, and coral spot fungus may attack damaged wood.
