Description

Agapanthus caulescens (African lily). The umbels of this species are shades of blue, varying from pale to dark purple blue. There is also a white form of A.caulescens subsp.caulescens. Strap-like foliage is bright green.

Previously known as Agapanthus nutans, this species of Agapanthus has three subspecies: Agapanthus caulescens subsp. caulescens, Agapanthus caulescens subsp. angustifolius and Agapanthus caulescens subsp. gracilis.

Cultivation

Protect crowns in the winter with a mulch. Suitable for coastal conditions.

Propagation

Divide plants in spring, never in winter. Or propagate from fresh seed in autumn or refrigerated seed in the spring. If collecting seed for a particular species, be careful to isolate your plant from other species of Agapanthus to avoid natural hybridisation.
