Description

Cynara scolymus (Globe artichoke). This species has delicate grey-green leaves, they are easily grown in most soils and many positions. Make sure it has enough space (one or two plants are enough in a small garden). Once considered to be an aphrodisiac.

Cultivation

Harvesting may start in mid summer and may end in early autumn. Plant at a depth of approximately 5cm. Fairly difficult to grow. A rich soil will mean better production. Cut the plump flower buds from the plants in spring and summer; the part eaten is the flower head before the flowers appear.

Propagation

Plant suckers about 1 m apart in early spring.

Pests, diseases or disorders

Slugs and snails, grey mould. Watch for septoria leaf spot.
