Description

Ailanthus altissima (Tree of heaven). This is a deciduous tree that develops rapidly into a round headed tree, which is grown for its foliage and attractive winged fruit. The foliage consists of very large dark green leaves comprising of 15-30 oval leaflets. The flowers are greenish-white and inconspicuous. They are followed by decorative winged seed pods which will first appear green, then age to a reddish brown in the summer. The leaves are about 1m long and the leaflets about 15cms long.

Interest and use

Shade, ornamental, specimen with large bold leaves. Tolerates coastal conditions as well as polluted urban areas.
