Dasylirion genus (Bear grass). In this genus there are about 18 species of yucca-like evergreen, palm-like perennials. The spiny leaves are narrow and about 1m long. From the centre of the leaves flowering spikes will emerge up to 3.5m tall; they will support masses of small creamy white flowers. The male and female flowers are borne on separate plants. They are frost tender, min 5C and will require well drained soil, with a sunny position. You will need to water well when in full growth, and less at other times. Propagation is by seeds in the spring.
