Description

Dianella caerulea (Flax lily). An evergreen herb native to eastern Australia and New Guinea. Grows in clumps from a creeping rhizome often with elongated, cane-like aerial stems. The grass-like leaves are about 80cm long and have rough margins. The open panicles are about 60cm tall and support small starry blue or white flowers in spring and summer. These are followed in autumn by ornamental deep purple-blue berries.

Cultivation

They are frost tender to half hardy. It is suitable for outdoors only in mild areas and elsewhere will require a cold greenhouse or frame. They will need a sunny position with well drained, neutral to acidic soil.

Propagate by division, or rooted offsets or from seed in spring and autumn.
