Description

Alchemilla genus (Lady's mantle). There are about 300 species of herbaceous perennials in this genus. The perennials will bear sprays of tiny, greenish-yellow flowers with conspicuous outer calyces, in the summer. The spreading stems will often root as they grow. They will form clumps of palmate or rounded, lobed grey-green leaves that are often covered in fine hairs.

The name Alchemilla comes from the Arabic name for the plant: 'Alkemelyah' which means "little magical one" and probably refers to its medicinal uses, as well as the way it captures the dew in its leaves.

Grown for ground covering and attractive foliage

Cultivation

They are fully hardy and can be grown in all but boggy soils, with sun or partial shade.

Propagation

Propagation is by seeds or by division of the fibrous roots in the spring or autumn.

Pests, diseases or disorders

Slugs and snails may damage young foliage.
