Description

Dryas octopetala (Mountain avens). This lovely alpine plant can make evergreen mats up to 20cm tall in flower with a spread exceeding 1m. It has dark green scalloped leaves to 4cm long. The beautiful pure white flowers, 3cm across and with a boss of golden stamens in the centre, are produced in late spring and early summer. These are followed by equally ornamental fluffy silver seed heads. Dryas octopetala var. argentea (syn. lanata) has felted leaves on both sides; ‘Minor’ has smaller flowers and leaves.
