Description

Allium altaicum (Altai Onion). This species will produce grey-green linear leaves and yellow-white flowers borne in bell-shaped dense rounded umbels.

Perennial, Bulb, Fragrant

Origin

E. Asia - Siberia to Mongolia.

The species name comes from the area where they are found; the Altai Mountains. 'Altai' means 'gold mountain' in Mongolian.

Interest and use

Grown for culinary use; the leaves and flowers can be eaten in salads and the bulbs can be eaten raw or cooked. Also can be grown for ornamental use.

Cultivation

They are fully to frost hardy, and will require an open, sunny situation with well drained soil. If left undisturbed a clump can be formed. Plant at a depth of approximately 12cm.

Propagation

Propagation is by offsets, by seed in autumn or by division of clumps (spring flowering varieties in late summer and summer flowering varieties in spring).
