Description

Echium pininana (Borage). This species is an evergreen rosette forming biennial/perennial. The leaves are elliptical-lance-shaped and light green. The flowers will bloom in panicle-like cymes which are blue from mid to late summer and rise in a tower of flowers up to 5 metres.

Origin

One of the giants of the garden world. Only likely to bloom naturally in the warmest UK areas: Devon, Cornwall, South Coast and London.

Cultivation

When grown under glass use a loam-based compost with full light, When grown outdoors grow in moderately fertile well-drained soil in full sun.

Propagation

Sow the seeds in the summer or by root semi-ripe cuttings in the summer.

Pests, diseases or disorders

Watch out for red spider mites and whitefly under glass, also slugs can cause a lot of damage.
