Description

Erica arborea (Briar). The largest family of heaths, has the widest distribution, from the Canary Islands and Portugal right across to Iran and south through the high mountains of Arabia and Ethiopia. In equatorial Africa it forms mist-shrouded forests of trees 6 m high with thick trunks. It has contorted woody stems, finely fibrous bark and dark green needle-like leaves. It bears masses of small grey white green flowers in spring.
