Description

Ficus bengalensis (Banyan tree). This is a large wide-spreading tree with unusual rooting branches. The leaves are very large and dark glossy green. Small reddish, decorative fruits will form.

Cultivation

They are frost hardy to frost tender, min 5-18C. They prefer full light or partial shade with fertile, well- drained soil. You should water the potted specimens moderately, and very little when temperatures are low.

Propagation

Propagate by seed in spring or by leaf-bud, stem-tip cuttings or by air layering in summer.

Figs have an obligate mutualism with Fig wasps. Only the Fig wasp can pollinate Figs and they can only reproduce in Fig flowers.

Pests, diseases or disorders

Red spider mite and scale insects may be a nuisance.
