Description

Fuchsia ‘Ridestar’ (Lady's eardrops). This genus has about 100 species with many hybrids. They will come in a variety of forms and a wonderful range of colours in shades of red, white, pink and purple. They are deciduous or evergreen trees, shrubs or perennials.

Interest and use

Grown for their flowers, usually borne from early summer to early autumn. The flowers are very attractive to bees. Suitable for coastal conditions. Attracts humming birds in suitable geographical locations.

Cultivation

They are frost hardy to frost tender, min 5C, Most of the species will need a sheltered partially shaded position, with fertile moist but well drained soil. Prolonged low temperatures cause loss of top growth. If top growth dies in winter, cut back to ground level in spring. When grown as pot plants in a green house, fuchsias also need high-nitrogen feeds.

Propagation

Sow seeds in spring. Propagate by softwood cuttings in any season.

Susceptible to whitefly, red spider mites and aphids.
