Description

Allium schoenoprasum (Chives). This is a hardy perennial bulb with narrowly cylindrical leaves and small rounded umbels of purple bell-shaped flowers which fade to pale purple.

Cultivation

Easy to grow in any well drained, loamy soil with full sun. When the plants become leggy, trim the hollow, grass-like leaves to renew the planting. Deadhead the fading flowers to promote further blooming.

Propagation

By seed or by division. Self-seeds freely.

Pests, diseases or disorders

Aphids. If the plant becomes to dry the leaves can turn brown on the edges. Occasionally, onion white rot and a downy mildew might affect plants.
