Allocasuarina genus (She oak). A genus of trees in the flowering plant family Casuarinaceae. Native to Southern Australia, they are commonly called sheoaks or she-oaks. They have long needle-like wiry branchlets called cladodes and their leaves are reduced to whorls of small triangular teeth which occur at regular intervals along the branchlets. Another characteristic feature are the spiny "cones", about the size of an acorn but with a texture more like a conifer cone.
Fallen cladodes form a dense, soft carpet beneath she oaks, which prevent undergrowth and make she oak woods remarkably quiet.
Popular with wood turners and as firewood, as it creates very little ash.
