Description

Alnus acuminata (Alder). This is a small tree with a straight trunk, oval leaves with toothed margins, pendulous male catkins and small green cone-like female flowers. Winged fruit develop in the autumn.

Interest and use

Raw material, hedging. A pioneer species which can be planted to stabilise river banks and improve fertility by fixing nitrogen. Also used for firewood, and for making coffins, large-scale construction, plywood and furniture.
